Whoa, I thought I was the only one! I've just recently started running my long runs with a tenkara and an ultralight pouch filled with a few flies, tippet, floatant, etc. Barely noticeable to run with. Such a fun way to explore country that I wouldn't normally explore on a day trip. Is this a thing?!
Very cool. Rad photos from Mike too. I was introduced to fly fishing about 8 years ago when I moved to NYC and had the opportunity to learn in the Catskills. Spent a few weekends practicing my casting in Central Park, and later learned to tie my own flies. Haven’t been since we started having kids, but was just thinking the other day that I should take our oldest out soon.
The last para, I too think that way- we are just in a hurry while racing & even while training for these races. There is a larger goal that takes the backseat almost every time we step outside our homes, we want to cover the route from A to B as fast as we can, we want to climb in the fastest known time to us. But some time we need to reflect, give ourselves leeway to enjoy and do what we did in our childhood. Not every day is to optimize training, the foremost thing is to keep joy in the driver seat.
I even found myself running through Caleb’s last paragraph. Had to go back and be deliberate about it on a second read to internalize the meaning. I found my breath slowing as I did so. Appreciation for life is closely linked to mindful breathing.
So cool that you have memories like that from your childhood, Caleb. If you ever get down here to New Zealand for Tarawera, I'll happily take you trout fishing.
Fastest Known Fish (FKF) it’s a real thing! Not too many routes but it can be done.

Yes, this is a thing! I remember years ago backpacking light (via Ryan Jordan) sorta kinda popularizing this

You might like the fly fishing novel The River Why — a classic.
I’ve read it! I did like it!

Sweet thanks! I’ll keep that in mind!
